"I invite all Christians, everywhere, to a renewed personal encounter with Jesus Christ, or at least an openness to letting him encounter them; I ask all of you to do this unfailingly each day. No one should think that this invitation is not meant for him or her…. Now is the time to say to Jesus: “Lord, I have let myself be deceived; in a thousand ways I have shunned your love, yet here I am once more, to renew my covenant with you. I need you. Save me once again, Lord; take me once more into your redeeming embrace." -Pope Francis (EG 3)

A burning desire exists in the hearts of Jesus’ disciples to know him and to bring the joy of that relationship to others. It begins in a simple way of meeting with Jesus. This occurs at baptism for sure, but also maybe through a friend, a bible study, a social activity, or a service trip. This meeting with Jesus grows over time into a conscious decision to give our lives to him, to follow him, and to bring others to him.
Jesus Is Lord seeks to provide a place for students to once again meet Jesus and deepen their relationship with him. We, the St. Mary’s community, will together enter into this process of growing in our knowledge of and commitment to the Lord as well as bringing others to meet him and inviting others to join us in following him as his disciples. This graced time together as one community of disciples goes right to the heart of who we are as St. Mary’s. Our mission statement declares that we “strive to live and proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ.” Jesus Is Lord gives all of us this opportunity to support one another on the path of life-long discipleship.
The goal of Jesus Is Lord is the same as the kerygma, or preaching, of the early apostles: we hope to meet the Lord with others and deepen our commitment to be his faith-filled disciples. Surely such a commitment will change our lives and renew our parish, our worship, our evangelization and the way we seek to build community. Imagine the greater effect we could have on campus when, renewed in Christ, we share his love for us with all those we meet. This was the fire of the Holy Spirit that burned in those first disciples and now, through this special time together with Jesus, we hope the Spirit will burn in us that same way.
“The Church needs genuine witnesses for the new evangelization: men and women whose lives have been transformed by meeting with Jesus, men and women who are capable of communicating this experience to others.” -St. John Paul II
