In addition to his diaconal, parish, and liturgical duties at St. Mary's, Deacon Switzer assists with baptisms, baptism classes for parents, and godparents, RCIA, prison ministry at Bryan's Hamilton Unit State Prison, and a ministry for homebound parishioners.
He was ordained in 1988; and prior to being assigned by the Bishop to St. Mary's in 2005, he served at St. Joseph's in Bryan, and at St. Luke's in Temple. He has had a 12-year prison ministry that involved several county jails and several state and federal prisons. He served on a voluntary basis as the Chaplain for the Brazos County Jail.
In addition to his assignment to St. Mary's, he serves on the Finance Council for the Diocese of Austin, and on the Advisory Board for the Cedarbrake Retreat Center.
His professional career was in corporate finance and banking. His wife Cathy and he were high school sweethearts; and they have three daughters and seven grandsons, who live in Tiburon, California; Park City, Utah; and Austin, Texas.
Both Deacon Switzer and his wife Cathy are certified spiritual directors and are available by appointment.
