St. Mary’s Institute for Catholic Studies is happy to announce Dr. Chris Baglow as the fall 2010 speaker for St. Mary’s Distinguished Speaker Series. Dr. Baglow will speak on "Belief Under Assault: Scientific Atheism and the Assault on Reason and Faith." This presentation will take place October 15 at 7:00 pm in the church, at St. Mary’s Catholic Center. The presentation is free and open to all.
Dr. Baglow currently serves as Pr...ofessor of Theology and Director of the Master of Arts Program in Theological Studies for lay students at Notre Dame Seminary in New Orleans. His most recent book on faith and science, entitled "Faith, Science & Reason: Theology on the Cutting Edge" was published by Midwest Theological Forum in January 2010.
Certain thinkers such as Richard Dawkins claim that religious faith is an outdated form of scientific ignorance and that science has disproved the existence of God. Stephen Hawking recently made the comment that God is not needed to create the world. Dr. Baglow’s presentation will examine these positions and raise a new possibility: that modern science has actually strengthened the credibility of the Christian Faith, which is itself an affirmation of a scientific approach to the universe.
